Why I am Happy to be Not Important Enough

Please allow me this small indulgence in my frail ego for now :)

One of my friends just let me know that I no longer exist. My wikipedia page has been given to some Oregon politician.

Her son was doing a high school assignment on the interwebs and I was the only person they knew with a wikipedia page, but no longer. Now his report will be about Susan Boyle.

The shame!

Digging around it seems this is the reason:

Delete Google news gives me nothing. I’m really unsure what claim to notability I’m supposed to be even searching for here. It’s a common name, but there are no claims to notability here (other than book authorship, and the books don’t appear to have articles or be particularly notable). Writing books is not enough, the Wikipedia folks need to be able to easily find articles about those books. Strange, had they checked with Wiley there have been tons of reviews of the Problogger Book :)

I quite like whoever this is though:

Keep Despite the many “delete” votes, Mr. Garrett clearly is notable per WP:BIO as he as works in “many significant libraries”. WorldCat shows his programming book held by only 40 something libraries but they are mostly university libraries and his second book is held by over 170 libraries. Primary sources may be used to verify an article. Drawn Some (talk) 16:19, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Serious for a moment though, in a way this is a good thing. Don’t let the phrase “Wiki” fool you, allegedly Wikipedia is not as democratic and free as we would like because remember human beings are involved. In fact many people face a running battle with Wikipedia every day where petty arguments and vengances are fought through edits and revisions. There are a few people who hold the power on such sites, and it is rarely the person being written about.

Did you know that Wikipedia does not care about truth, you just need to be able to externally support your story? The joke about MSM and Wikipedia making stuff up and using each other for verification is true. Check it out for yourself. I wondered where I heard this before. Got this from Graywolf, his post is well worth a read!

Most people, and me included, are far better off being ignored by Wikipedia and instead having our names associated with things we can create and control. If someone searches for me I want them to find this blog or my main one, not something written about me by someone who doesn’t even know me. Especially now Wiki pages are appearing in Google news and blended search results.

For now I am happy to leave having a wiki page until I get my picture taken holding aloft the Stanley Cup ;)

It’s a shame about the Google juice though, would be nice to get the link without the page! :)

I often queried the validity of Wikipedia. I’m going to read through the Graywolf post now.

    Thanks for sharing,

To paraphrase… is it better to have had a wikipedia bio page and lost than never have had a wiki page at all?

Pretty cool you were in there at all Chris… ;) Not something that will be going onto my CV anytime soon I suspect.
