A similar occurrence happened to my family and I when we took a drive from New York all the way to Moab, Utah and went camping there for a week. Let me tell you, the first 2 days were grueling because of the amount of rain that poured down there. I was lucky enough to have set up multiple canvas and cords to secure them. I even went so far as to keep our kids dry by putting them up on the mobile camper, but my wife and I were SOL since we're real nature enthusiasts and dealt not so much with the moisture, but the non-stop thunder and lighting we were getting all the way to dawn. it was the strangest thing too on the 3rd day. When the sun came up that day, the rain dissipated. We didn't see another drop for the rest of the trip. I am sorry that you had all your gear ruined, but it was nice to read that you all did manage to have a laugh afterwords.

Haha. I can relate. We got rained out the last day of our camping trip, but the rest of the trip was fun.

My house smelled like musty socks and campfire smoke for a couple days. Even after doing the laundry.

Glad to have you back.
