So many people have asked me I thought I might as well put up a post to pre-emptively settle your curiosity.
The big question people are asking is if I have made a bundle out of it. No, I did not make anything out of the deal, I won’t make anything out of the deal and there is no possibility of me making anything out of the deal since I am not a shareholder, the only stake I have in Performancing is emotional.
Just over a year ago Nick and Patrick hired me on a fixed term contract to work with them. Initially to do certain projects and blogging wasn’t going to be part of my duties. I jumped at the chance, I was deeply unhappy at the marketing agency I was working for, and the chance to work on something exciting while seeing more of my family was too good to resist. Obviously writing is something I love and became a big part of my work quite quickly. Posting every day (for a while many times a day, thousands of words) I really got a kick out of. Mainly though I was brought on to do techy and project-related stuff.
I am terrifically proud of what we achieved in such a short time. The blog went from zero to technorati top 20 (currently #15), we grew a massive community very very quickly (over 30k registered users), our firefox extension has been hugely popular (400k downloads from Mozilla site alone), Metrics and Partners record millions of page views a day with individual user databases in the gigabytes with an excellent up time record. On a personal level I take a lot of satisfaction out of quite a hellish learning curve!
Sorry to disappoint anyone but the only details of the deal I have are in the same blog posts and press releases you have seen. What do I think about it? I think Nick and Patrick did the best they could for their company. It was well known that something had to be done about the ever-growing Metrics. Nick and Patrick are good guys, they don’t just make slap dash decisions, they will have thought long and hard about the move.
Regardless of public opinion the deal I am sure is about giving the advertising network and firefox extension the best chance and I hope I get to be involved in some capacity with whatever brand and company structure comes out of it.
