Wayback When – My Blogiversary!

I just realised it is my Blogiversary! Well, it was two days ago. Looking at the “Wayback Machine” my first proper blog entry was Friday 5th February 1999, which means I have been blogging 7 years!

Check out my first “Blog”. It’s not that interesting, I didn’t really know what I was doing.

Due to some not-so-clever programming decisions on my part the files are not always available. For a start I did a browser detect, secondly I thought it would be wise to ban bots using robots.txt. Oh dear. To get the full picture of what it was like you have to look at both my .com and .org domains. The geeks amongst you will notice it was programmed first in ASP, then variously JSP, Perl, PHP, ASP.NET .. as I learned a new platform I would change my hosting and my blog. Consistency? What’s that?

That is one of the two reasons why the screenshot above is from 2001, there are no other complete screens before then, the other reason is I quite like the Segway as a topic, so 2001. Another hi point was 2nd July 2002 when my GDI+ book was released. The book before was not as big achievement for me, this one was a good book and published by Wrox so I was really chuffed about it.

This from 2002 is quite a giggle

I think I should start compiling a “top 5 dumb things my friends have
done”. Help me out if there are any good ones I have missed.
1. Jon broke his arm while arm-wrestling

2.
“Two friends” got arrested trying to “borrow” a cafe table and get it
to a friends house .. right in front of a watching policeman

3. Bob electrocuted himself while trying to fix a PC while it was switched on

4. Tony “soiled” his pants on the way to work and got stopped by police

5. ChrisM crashed his car after the cigarette he threw out of the window blew back into his lap

Low points? You will notice the entries stop for a while at “You’ve got mail”, Sunday 5th September 1999. That is because a really traumatic event happened the next day. It’s almost a full year before I faced blogging again.

It’s a shame I can’t find a version that shows what I thought on September 11th 2001, I will keep looking. Of course there was so much written about it I might not have bothered but the next day there is an entry titled “horror” …

It’s nice being able to look over my past life like this. You should try it for yourself. Although, I shake my head at some of the things I say, how embarrassing was I?

Going to San Diego

Well it looks like I will be spending Valentines day with Nick ;)

We are going to San Diego on Performancing business. Looking forward to seeing California, I have never been to the USA before, plus I know we will get lots of work done meeting the guys face to face. Even though we do pretty well using online tools there is no substitute for sitting around something and really discussing in real life.

It does though mean a week away from Clare and Amy which is a big downer on the whole thing. It would have been so much nicer them coming along. What with ludicrously expensive flights and hotels, gruellingly long flight with many connections, it just wouldn’t have worked even if there had been time in the schedule for family time.

Maybe next time.

Cheekily I ordered a 50mm lense from Amazon.com to arrive while I am there saving me half the price ($80 versus £80, got to haven’t you?). If Art doesn’t steal it before I get there I will have lots of pics to show (probably of airport departure lounges …)

In the meantime lots to do, time waits for no geek ;)

My love of food

A strange thing has happened in my “shall we move to Canada” decision process. I think we have pretty much decided to go, the final piece of the puzzle is the Amy factor (schools, her leaving friends, nice but affordable houses near school ..) which we can only really work out over there and the immigration and citizenship process which thinking and talking won’t solve. Because a lot of the big and necessary discussions have been had my mind has turned to thinking about more mundane matters. Like junk food.

Thankfully the great and brilliant and lovely Canadian Flickr community has come to the rescue and made me feel my junk food tastes and living in Calgary are in fact compatible!

It’s not the same if it’s not canadian

Apologies for the grainy image, it was taken on my cameraphone in a washroom at the “snowy owl” sled dogs store in Canmore. Funny eh?

Well, it tickles me :)

Fish and Chips … Mmmmm

Really bad for me but what the heck. One of the foods I will miss when we move to Canada.

Please tell me someone that they do fish and chips in Calgary?

(Proper fish and chips, not the stuff you get in restaurants with the bones and skin still on)

MAME running on a digital camera!

Oh I got to find out how to do this! This guy has MAME running on his old digital camera, move over PSP my old Kodak running Doom will kick your ass!

MAMED! – Close-up Images of MAMED

Image quality is much better in real life but taking pictures of LCD screens is difficult. I guess I now know why they always fake these in advertisements. Here are four high-res images for you to examine if you are still a non-believer. You can also use these for publication if you want.

Update: Oh man, what luck, my old camera is a DC210, the lowest model it works with is 220 :O(

Happy Groundhog Day

Every year we watch the film Groundhog Day on or around the day. It’s a silly ritual but we like it. We must have seen that film now more than any other, although the star wars and back to the future trilogies must come close or slightly edge it, not sure.

Last night we watched it again with our friend Damian. Even though we know most of the lines we still enjoy it. The music still irritates and I still feel good when it all comes together at the end.

According to IMDB the film was originally going to be quite different. The phenomenon was going to have an explanation (a lame one) and it was going to begin with the time loop already in progress. Worst of all … it was going to be Tom Hanks in the lead.

If any one of those things had gotten into the film I don’t think we would be having this “conversation”.

Yay my lense works

It seems through only the power of *wishing really hard* my kit lense is now fixed – hurrah!

I imagine it is still damaged, I mean it can’t have stopped working and started working without some wear and tear, right?

So do I send it for mendin’ or do I live with it as it is. Doesn’t look like my new lense is going to arrive any time soon. I have been promised it would arrive today or any day now for like a month. Actually approaching two pretty much.

What to do …

For real or some sneaky SEO thing?

I am afraid associating with SEOs and affiliate marketers has made me cynical. I see ulterior motives in everything I see. Give you an example, DaveN has launched a blog about Paul McKenna and his diet-without-dieting approach called Diet Trials. Having been interested in NLP for about 15 years I have always been a fan of Paul McKenna, particularly when he teamed up with NLP uber-guru Dr. Richard Bandler himself.

DaveN writes apparently sincerely, which is good. Treats the subject matter seriously, no taking the piss, which is nice. But at the bottom are the telltale links that make me think this is linkbait. Which is it? Spam or truth? Bit of both? :)

Tykes Motto

Roughly translated into English

See all, hear all say nothing,
Eat all, drink all, pay nothing,
And if you do anything for nothing,
Do it for yourself.

I am going to keep any more commentary on this subject to myself until I have emigrated out of Yorkshire! (Following rule number 1 I guess, heh)
