Networking newbie advice?

by Chris Garrett on August 10, 2003

My network is growing slowly but surely, to the point where I could really do with some advice from you folks who have been at this a lot longer (or are just plain better at it!). It seems I have some growing pains problems

1) How do you find time to keep in touch with the people in your network so they don’t just end up mostly being “hi, let’s talk sometime”
2) I can’t remember half of the people in my network until I look at their profile and look at the discussions we have had, how do you organise things?
3) I find myself telling people the same things all the time when they email me, is there any ecademy opt-in email list facility or something? (I don’t want to put *everything* in my profile its embarassing enough as it is!)

Some people have become more than entries in my network list but mostly through their own efforts more than mine. It would be nice for me to learn how to do the tricky feat of a network of quantity AND quality.

Any tips welcomed smile

Update: Some great comments already – keep them coming and maybe I can do an article compiling the best advice and how I get on with following it? smile
