My friend has an interview on monday for a web role (I can’t say any more as it may jeopardize their current job!) and I have been trying to think of questions (s)he may be asked. Here is my current (flawed, as I have never been a HR expert, heh) suggestions.
Sometimes how you answer and support with evidence or how you come up with answer is more important than your answer – no one word answers! If you don’t understand ask for clarification. Often good to rephrase the question back to them if you need thinking time “so what you are asking is what I think about _____”
Important – What can you bring to the role that noone else can? (Your USP) – if they take away one thing it needs to be this!
“Unlike other applicants I _____________ which means ______________ which would benefit the organisation _______________”
Where would you like to be
– next year
– 5 years
– 10 years
– when you retire?
What interests you about new media/web, why do you work in the web?
What is your favourite web site(s) and why?
What would you change about the organisations web site and why? How would you go about it?
What do you like most/least about current job?
Why are you leaving? Why THIS job? Why this organisation? Why now?
If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? What are your best/worst properties? How would a colleague describe you? Describe yourself in one word/one sentence/three words
If you could do any job in the world, if money etc was no object, what and why?
What do you like to do in your spare time? How does this affect your work life? How might you change it?
Describe the internet/world wide web to a 5 year old
What has been your greatest contribution
Describe your best ever project, ideal project, worst project, biggest cockup, worst failure, biggest mistake, worst/best colleague/boss etc
Who do you most admire?
I hope for my friends sake they dont ask Microsoft “how would you move mount fuji” questions
My main piece of advice though is once you get past the application stage and get an interview, they already think you can do the job they just need to check your face fits (and maybe double check you haven’t mislead them about your abilities/experience).
Will think up some more..anyone any ideas?
